Soldiers are mothers, too

War is not like a hollywood blockbuster.  A soldier is not an action hero.  Outside the statistics and the news-worthy portrayals, there are deeply personal issues that most of us don’t see.

Filmed on Mother’s Day 2005, the video shows a mother’s farewell as she returns to the Middle East after a brief R&R with her family.  Note the only time Elijah refused to give his mother a kiss—a “goodbye” kiss;  for the last time we said goodbye, our lives became engulfed with loneliness, anxieties, anger, and nightmares for my children.  I couldn’t imagine how especially hard it was for my wife to leave her children whom she, just months ago, were carrying in her womb for nine months…

…but whatever it is that doesn’t kill us, will make us stronger.

Filler

Dear Readers/Viewers,

Sorry I haven’t posted a blog for quite a long time.  My wife and I have been busy doing some home improvements…blah blah blah.  For those who missed me, and a few who wanted to know if I died, THANK YOU.  I should be able to post more soon.

Attached is a filler video (from so long ago).  Happy Memorial Day.

Lovingly Yours,

Mr. Nonsense

Momma

by dawn 2004

Did you love me like I love my little boys?

Did you gently kiss me while I lay sleeping?

Did you take in the smell of my hair or tickle your little lips with it?

Did you gaze lovingly down at my little body,

Envious of how peaceful my sleep seemed to be?

Did you long to pick me up and hold me,

wishing I could stay in your arms like that forever?

Did you stroke my soft cheeks while asking God

To always bless me and watch over me all my days?

Did you hold me close and make sure I was warm?

Did you whisper “I love you” in my ear before you would leave?

Did you hold your face close to mine

And think how lucky you were to have me?

Momma, did you love me like I love my little boys?

The Riches of my Soul

Sally deFord

Bedtime stories; whispered prayers;
Goodnight kisses; dreams to share
Hands to hold; hearts to mold; faces full of wonder
Innocence and eager eyes;
Gentle laughter; lullabies;
Warmth and peace and memories; these will be my treasures

These are the riches of my soul
This is my bright celestial gold
Precious things my heart will always hold
Dearer than the wealth of all the world

Hymns that ring with joyful praise;
Words of truth that light our days;
Parables; miracles: messages from heaven
Hearts that bear the Savior’s name
Kindled by the Spirit’s flame
All aglow with faith that grows and love that lasts forever

These are the riches of my soul
This is my bright celestial gold
Precious things my heart will always hold
Dearer than the wealth of all the world

Twilight walks and quiet talk of childhood’s hopes and fears
Extra miles and “thank you” smiles I’ll cherish through the years
Temple walls and mission calls and silent, grateful tears
These are all the world to me
Treasures I can keep

These are the riches of my soul
This is my bright celestial gold
Precious things my heart will always hold
Dearer than the wealth of all the world

Rainbow connection

Here’s a collection of Mino’s cute and crazy photos featuring he and I singing his favorite song “Rainbow Connection.”  Ignore the bad singing on my part. :)

RAINBOW CONNECTION
Kermit the Frog

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

[Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.]

All of us under its spell,
We know that it’s probably magic…

Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
It’s something that I’m s’posed to be…
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Laa, da daa dee da daa daa,
La laa la la laa dee daa doo…

A stay-home dad’s instructional video

Here’s a video I made in 2005 while my wife was deployed in the Middle East.  I found comfort in documenting my life as a stay-home dad and sharing it with with my wife (and some of them, to my friends) via e-mail.

I still remember trying my hardest to lysol every nooks and cranies to prevent the spread of infection everytime one of us would get ill—only to see the youngest quickly picking…and eating…up some of the vomit or loose stool that came out of his sick older brother.  I could never be quick enough.  Still, I always wonder if it would have been easier to play mom had I have a pair of nursing boobs :)
